Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Thursday he's "100 percent" confident that he can rally the GOP behind whichever candidate wins the party's primary - even if it's Donald Trump or Ted Cruz.
Appearing on Fox News, Priebus took a question from host Sean Hannity about the divisiveness that's occurring among the Republican establishment because the top two candidates are considered outsiders, noting that some "hate" Trump and Cruz. "Do you believe in your heart that you're going to be able to pull the party together?" asked Hannity.
"One hundred percent. You know the unifying thing about what I have to do is no matter who you're for, everyone can agree that we have to have a national party and infrastructure that has its act together ... everyone is gonna get behind whoever the winner is," Priebus replied, the Washington Examiner reported. "Whoever the delegates of our party choose, that's going to be the nominee, and our party is gonna be behind that person 110 percent to save this country."
However, as Politico noted, there is at least one person in the Republican establishment who has outright said he would not endorse a Trump nomination: Jeb Bush. On Thursday, Bush declined four times to say he would support Trump should he become the nominee.
Since Trump announced his candidacy for the White House, Priebus has often been in the position of having to defend Trump's position in the Republican field. While there have been internal party difficulties, Priebus has often suggested publicly that Trump is positive for the GOP and could well be the Republican nominee.
"I’m not one of these people that think that Donald Trump can’t win a general election," Priebus told The Washington Post. "I actually think there is a huge crossover appeal there to people that are disengaged politically that he speaks to. ... Donald Trump taps into the culture."
