The Detroit Pistons have gone 4-2 since getting backup point guard Brandon Jennings back from an Achilles injury which ended his 2014-15 season. Jennings seems to still be working his way back into form but due to his limited role in Detroit he is a highly sought after trade target. The New York Knicks have been the team linked to trading for Jennings the most but it seems like the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns might be the most likely landing spots, according to Mitch Lawrence of Sporting News.
All of the trade talk surrounding Jennings could be moot as head coach Stan Van Gundy has said he has no interest in trading him right now. That could all change of course if they are offered a deal that will help them in another area but Jennings is the Pistons best option at the backup point guard spot behind Reggie Jackson by a wide margin.
There were many people who assumed that the Pistons would trade Jennings when he returned from the Achilles injury because he would be relegated to a backup role and Van Gundy had liked the way Steve Blake played, even though all of the numbers disagreed with him. The reports before Jennings returned stated that if he came back and looked somewhat healthy the Pistons would deal him and although Van Gundy denies it there are still plenty of people who believe he will ultimately be traded this season.
The two teams being discussed as "prime landing spots" don't exactly seem to be great fits for Jennings. The Rockets have underachieved this season for sure but their main issue all year has been on the defensive end and Jennings will not help solve that problem. Jennings can fill it up in the scoring column but for a team like Houston that scores plenty and has trouble defending, a trade for him doesn't make much sense.
Phoenix might make a little more sense just for the fact that they lost Eric Bledsoe for the season and could use another guard. Brandon Knight though, reportedly did not like playing with another point guard (Bledsoe) and their lack of chemistry caused tension so this too doesn't seem like it would be a very good fit.
Jennings is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season so any team that trades for him may see him as a rental. Jennings has been up-and-down since returning from the Achilles injury but he should be able to help someone out for the rest of this season, whether that is the Pistons or some other team remains to be seen.
