David Bowie lost his 18-month battle with cancer on Jan. 10, but a final photo of the legendary rocker looking cheery and dapper showed no signs of him slowing down. The photo was taken by Bowie's long-time photographer Jimmy Page for a promotional shoot and was uploaded on his official Instagram page on Jan. 8, the day of his birthday and two days before his death.
The last time Bowie was seen in public was last Dec. 7 in New York City during the opening night of his stage show "Lazarus" and appeared to be in good spirits, according to People.
"Lazarus" is a play co-written by the British singer and Irish playwright Edna Walsh. The musical is inspired by the Walter Tevis-penned novel "The Man Who Fell to Earth," which was adapted into a film in 1976 and starred Bowie.
The musical consists of songs written by Bowie as well as previously recorded songs with new arrangements, according to the New York Times.
