The San Francisco 49ers reportedly interviewed former Broncos and Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan on Tuesday, and the team is very interested in him as a head-coaching candidate, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport. Shanahan has experience with the 49ers in the past, as he served as their offensive coordinator prior to his head coaching positions in Denver and Washington, D.C.
Shanahan had reportedly re-entered the picture while the 49ers were waiting to figure out the situation with former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. The former Giants head coach is reportedly in talks with the Eagles, and he could land in Philadelphia as the next Eagles head coach soon.
Reports surfaced on Wednesday that the 49ers were still interested in former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, and it looks like the 49ers front office is trying to figure out quickly which direction they want to take in 2016. Shanahan has been out of the NFL for the past two seasons, but he has three Super Bowl rings, including two he has won as the head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Shanahan's time in Washington ended poorly, but the head coach had a quarterback in Robert Griffin III, who fell apart on him due to injuries after posting one strong season. Shanahan clearly deserves some of the blame for what happened in Washington, but the former Super Bowl Champion is likely chomping at the bit to prove that he can still lead a team in this league. The 49ers have plenty of issues to resolve this offseason, but before they can move forward on the field, they will need to decide who will be their next head coach, and interest in Shanahan has reportedly increased considerably.
