Hermes Birkin Bags: Owning Luxury Bags Better Than Stock Or Gold Investments, Says Study (PHOTO)

If you're looking to expand your financial portfolio this year, don't look at gold or stocks for investments. A recent study on luxury bags revealed that buying a Hermes Birkin Bag might be a better choice.

The study, conducted by online marketplace Baghunter, compared investments for gold, stocks and the Birkin bag with data covering a period of 35 years. The researchers saw that the Birkin didn't decrease or experience a "fluctuation downwards" in its value over the years compared to gold and stocks, which saw its profitable rise and biggest dips.

Gold had a low price of $271.04 in 2001 and peaked at $1,571.52 in 2011, while the stock market experienced a -36.5 percent drop in 2008 and peaked at 37.20 percent in 1995. On the other hand, Birkin's value actually increases an average of 14.2 percent annually even with the recession. It's the "safest and least volatile" market to invest on, the study further pointed out.

The Birkin, which was first released in 1984 by Hermes, was named after Jane Birkin, an actress and fashion icon. The luxury fashion brand only produces a limited supply of the handbag, which makes it more valuable than most bags.

"The Birkin is an extraordinarily well made bag. Each one is handmade by trained craftsmen and can take over 18 hours to make, and that number can be doubled if working on exceptional pieces such as those accessorized with diamonds," said fashion editor Marissa N. Stempien via Jezebel.
