Samsung has announced Monday that a gold edition of the Gear S2 smartwatch will start rolling out globally. It is part of the "Classic" edition that has been previously made available in China, which also include the Gear S2 platinum variant.
The gold Gear S2 Classic is made of 18K rose gold material and comes with a white leather strap. Samsung has not officially confirmed its pricing but it is now available in Europe for preorder and has a price tag of €480, or around $520, according to The Verge. The cost is significantly cheaper than Apple's own rose gold smart watch, which is available for an eye-watering $17,000. The price difference is attributed to the fact that the Gear S2 is only gold plated, with a stainless steel metal underneath whereas the Apple Watch is solid gold.
It is important to note that the Gear S2 runs on Samsung's homegrown operating system called Tizen. It has been criticized for its lack of apps in the past, although some critics praise its simple and intuitive interface. Fortunately, Samsung has recently revealed that it has partnered with developers in order to expand the wearable's application ecosystem, according to Android Authority.
The wearable device will ship with fancy watch faces and could feature Samsung Pay as well as iOS support in the future, Mashable reported. There is still no word on the U.S. release date and pricing, so fans in the market for this latest Samsung device would have to wait a little longer.
