Corey Hawkins has been cast in the lead role for the upcoming "24: Legacy," a reboot of the popular Fox TV show starring Kiefer Sutherland.
The "Straight Outta Compton" actor will portray Eric Carter, a former Army Ranger now working for the country's Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). The character will succeed Jack Bauer as the hero of the show, according to Deadline.
Fox first announced that it would be rebooting the show last week during the 2016 Winter TCA Press Tour.
When asked if any of the original characters, including Bauer, would make an appearance on the reboot, Fox CEO Dana Walden replied, "Never say never, but right now, no," according to Entertainment Tonight Online.
Walden explained: "There's a time-jump. This is a new organization, a new cast of characters, a completely different story in terms of the special ops group we're focusing on...There are nods in the pilot to prior CTU agents, but no ongoing characters."
Unlike the original series, where Bauer was the sole protagonist over the course of the show's nine seasons, "24: Legacy" will feature a female co-lead who has yet to be cast.
The reboot will also be laxer in the original's distinct "real-time" format and will only consist of 12 episodes instead of the usual 24, according to Entertainment Weekly.
