After five seasons of HBO's hit show "Game of Thrones," Sophie Turner's Sansa Stark has remained a relatively flat character. She's a damsel in distress; a tortured princess who needs rescuing. Though we see the seeds of change during the latter half of season four, this past season reverted Sansa back to her helpless and beaten down self to the dismay of fans of all over. Collectively, audiences announced that "enough is enough" when it came to Sansa's torment.
Perhaps that has led to some real change this season.
Turner told Entertainment Weekly during the SAG Awards that this season will be crucial for her character.
"I mean this season is a really, really big one for Sansa," she said. "It's probably her best season yet. It's her really coming into her own. She, this season, really commands the respect that she deserves and she grabs hold of it and she runs with it and it's really good."
Season five saw Sansa return to her home in Winterfell only to marry the sadistic Ramsay Bolton. It was there she came across Theon Greyjoy and the two attempted to escape during the season five finale with their ultimate fate unknown. But Turner hinted that viewers are "finally getting that storyline that you've been craving for the past five seasons."
"It was amazing because the past five seasons, it feels like it's been building up and up to that," she said. "You can only suffer so much before she finally gets her, the respect that she deserves."
And, as with every other season of "Game of Thrones," fans should expect some major twists and turns.
"I mean this season there's like so many shocks, it's massive," Turner added. "It's the biggest season yet. And just like in terms of character development, so many people's storylines, I'm so excited for. I'm so excited to see Alfie's [Theon] one this season. It's going to be good."
Turner can next be seen in this May's "X-Men: Apocalypse" as Jean Grey. Season six of "Game of Thrones" will premiere on April 24.
