The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of Super Bowl 50, losing in ineffective fashion to the New England Patriots in the AFC divisional round of the NFL playoffs. The organization's sites have turned to 2016 and, reportedly, to locking up Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry with a new contract extension.
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com revealed on Wednesday of Super Bowl week that the Chiefs and Berry are "ramping up talks" on an extension.
Berry, 27, was the Chiefs' first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was unexpectedly diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in the fall of 2014. Berry's NFL career was put on hold after just six games that season as he attempted to deal with the life-changing news.
But Berry persevered and was declared cancer-free on June 22, 2015. He returned to the field for the Chiefs this past season, notching 61 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed and earning his fourth Pro Bowl and second first-team All-Pro selection.
Berry's backend mate, Ron Parker, signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Chiefs prior to this past season. Berry is set to become an unrestricted free agent after counting $8.357 million against the Kansas City cap in 2015, the final year of his restructured six-year, $50 million deal.
