Winter Storm Lexi has been crossing the mid-Atlantic and New England regions since early Friday morning, bringing with it varying levels of snowfall, with some areas set to receive up to 1 foot. The storm comes at a bad time and will likely cause commuting issues for the weekend, according to The Weather Channel.
The mid-Atlantic has already been hit with 5 inches in some areas, with the precipitation coming at a 1-inch-per-hour rate. Lightning accompanied the snowfall in Newark and other north New Jersey areas Friday morning, according to The Weather Channel.
The New York area is anticipating 4 to 6 inches, but the storm is bringing along wet snow and slushy conditions leading to slick roads and sidewalks. Wind speeds are expected to be somewhere in the 30 mph range as well, making travel somewhat perilous in the morning hours, according to New York Magazine.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Massachusetts area, set to stay in effect until at least 3 p.m., reported Mass Live. The storm is supposed to be quick and hard-hitting, and some of the highest levels of snowfall are expected along Interstate 95, a high-traffic highway in the Northeast.
Lexi's snowfall being so wet has meant heavy snow, which reportedly has caused power outages in the areas affected, including southeast New England, as reported by The Weather Channel.
Snow should stop in the mid-Atlantic in the early afternoon but continue until later in the day in New England.
