With Sony and Microsoft gearing up to put their next-generation gaming consoles on the market for the holiday shopping season, one would think that all surprises in the game system world would be over, however the indie developer-based Ouya has a holiday attraction up its sleeve.
In preparation for the upcoming holiday season a limited edition Ouya gaming system is now available for pre-order. The updated version of the Android-powered console comes in white, including the console and controller.
For those who aren't impressed with the new color, seen above, IGN reports Ouya is also offering 8GB more flash storage for a total of 16GB. Other than the memory addition, the white Ouya is nearly the same product as the traditional black Ouya. Of course, the limited edition nature of the console plus the additional 8GB of storage has forced the price of the console up from $99 to $129.
The Ouya gaming console came out earlier this year and promised to be a home for indie developers of games to make their content available to a large audience. Powered by Android, Ouya won't be home to any big ticket games like "Call of Duty: Ghosts" or "Grand Theft Auto V." What it can offer is hundreds of smaller, more simple games offered by inde developers.
"It really has never been easier to build games before," said Julie Uhrman at a GDC Next Panel a few weeks ago. "Between the growing number of platforms and the growing number of engines to the fact that every single person today is a gamer. I truly believe that. I think one of the things that mobile and tablets did was create an instance for us to always engage and to play something."
In this spirit, Ouya has been marketed as the best place for indie developers to place their new content and the device's sales have mostly kept up with expectations upon launch.
