It's A Wonderful Life' Sequel Not Happening; Paramount Won't Release The Rights

It was reported earlier this week that plans were in the works for a sequel to the 1946 Christmas film "It's a Wonderful Life." Unfortunately it seems that idea has been stopped as quickly as it came about.

In a statement from a studio spokeswoman, Paramount pictures, which owns the rights to the film, has said it will block any plans to revive the film and turn it into a franchise.

"No project relating to 'It's A Wonderful Life' can proceed without a license from Paramount," the studio said in a statement according to NYDailyNews. "To date, these individuals have not obtained any of the necessary rights, and we would take all appropriate steps to protect those rights."

A company called Star Partners and Hummingbird Productions announced plans Monday to create a sequel to the popular film about a family man at the end of his rope who tries to commit suicide. He is saved by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he had never been born.

Bob Farnsworth, president of Nashville Tenn.-based Hummingbird Productions, told trade publication Variety that the film was set for a 2015 release and would star Karolyn Grimes, the actress who played George Bailey's daughter in the original film. He also told The Hollywood Reporter that the rights to the film are in the public domain. It turns out that is far from true and Paramount retains the rights and will not be green lighting a sequel any time soon.
