Following one last "Wolverine" solo movie schedule to arrive in 2017, Hugh Jackman will be hanging up his claws for good...But will he really? With the massive success of Ryan Reynolds' "Deadpool," everyone is clamoring for a Wolverine role in the follow up. The two have a hilariously entertaining relationship in the comics, and 20th Century Fox isn't blind to the money making opportunities the duo would generate. Of course, they'd have to convince Jackman to come out of Mutant retirement, a prospect that "Deadpool" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick aren't ruling out.
The pair sat down with Cinema Blend earlier this week and discussed their disappointment with the Jackman Wolverine era coming to a close just as "Deadpool" was taking off. However, they weren't ready to rule out a Wolverine comeback all together.
"What I would say is we've broken all the rules, so there are no rules that we're unafraid to break, and so, you never know," Wernick said.
The duo did acknowledge that Jackman's 17 years in character has earned him the right to call it quits, though.
"We would love to be able to have Wolverine go head to head with Deadpool, but we also have to keep in mind that there is this larger X-strategy in place and then there's also, I think, probably a little fatigue on Hugh's part," Reese said. "He's done so many versions of Wolverine and he's done one more, and I just have to believe at some point he wants to hang up the claws and I just think we have to respect that. It's the bottom line, it's unfortunate that the timing worked out to be the way it is, but at the same time, you can never begrudge an actor or anyone in any profession, the decision to be like alright, it's time to hand it off to someone else."
Of course, that won't stop the writers/producers from trying.
"We might be showing up at Hugh's ranch in Australia with a rag with chloroform on it. You just never know," Reese joked.
