"Deadpool," the rated-R Marvel film starring Ryan Reynolds, has broken several records in the history books while gaining $135 million in total over the weekend. The film is expected to rake in a total of $150 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which makes it set to beat the record set by last year's $93-million blockbuster "Fifty Shades of Grey," according to AFP.
Other records that the movie has broken in the North American territory include biggest opening for an R-rated film, biggest Fox opening, biggest feature directorial debut, biggest opening for the month of January and February and biggest PLF R-rated opening.
The film also holds the biggest Russian debut after it nabbed $12.4 million as well as the biggest IMAX 2-D and R-rated opening on a global scale, contributing $28 million in total, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Fox heavily promoted the film months before its release, using "Wait Til You Get a Load of Me" as one of its taglines to emphasize its comic elements.
Directed by Tim Miller with a budget of $58 million, the film also stars Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T. J. Miller and Gina Carano and currently holds a rating of 84 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, according to Variety.
