Star Wars Games Rumors: EA Working On An Open World Game For Next-Gen

When people look back on 2013 this New Years they'll be hard not to factor Star Wars into their reminiscing. After Disney's purchase of Lucas Films and the announcement that a slew of new films in the iconic science fiction universe people have had Star Wars in the back of their minds. This year, the once dormant franchise has had new life breathed into it as casting rumors and plotlines run rampant online. Perhaps one of the most exciting things about the reinvigorated pop-culture icon is the fact that game developers will look to the franchise as a profitable storytelling space once again.

Among the first to kick off the new line of Star Wars games appears to be EA, which is reportedly working on an open world Star Wars game for next-gen consoles. According to Kotaku, EA Canada is developing the title based on information gathered from a job listing which reads: "EA Canada is looking for an experienced Animation director to help define and deliver on the vision for a major new next gen open world action game."

To further lend credence to this rumor, two other executive producer position listings hold clues that a collaborative process between EA Canada in Vancouver and Visceral Games in Redwood Shores. EA revealed earlier this year through more job postings that Visceral was working on a next-gen Star Wars project. More recently, according to IGN, it confessed it would be making more Star Wars games over the course of the next decade.

Star Wars has had a long history in the gaming industry with titles like the cult-success "Knights of the Old Republic," which branched into the less-than-successful MMORPG "Star Wars: The Old Republic." Meanwhile, Battlefield developer DICE is working on a next-gen version of "Star Wars: Battlefront," but details on that project have yet to be revealed.
