Imagine the gooey wonder that is a cinnamon roll stuffed inside a glazed doughnut and you've got the newest craze coming out of a New York City bakery. Pastry Chef Thiago Silva created the incredible treat at the Manhattan restaurant Catch. It's served alongside pumpkin ice cream, spiced rum sabayon and a cranberry-pomegranate sauce, and will only set you back $13.
Like the cronut and the cruffin before it, the Cinnamon Roll Donut combines two of the most popular American deserts into one. However, the creation did not come easily for the executive pastry chef. Silva first came up with the idea when he created a doughnut that had a cinnamon and apple filling.
"I thought the idea was cool if I put a cinnamon roll [inside], but it would have to be raw and cook at the same time as the donut," Silva told Mashable.
Silva knew that he was on to something when the idea popped into his head, but it took him several failed attempts to get the roll properly stuffed into a doughnut. Thanks to his experience making stuffed pastas like ravioli, he was finally able to determine the correct doughnut to cinnamon roll ratio. Silva noted that the hardest part of the delicious desert was trying to create a doughnut thin enough to fit the roll inside, but thick enough to hold the pastry together.
"[There are] a lot of tricky elements," Silva said of his creation. "It's easy to get wrong."
Now that the chef has created a Frankenstein-like desert, he said that he cannot wait to experiment more with different types of deserts.
"I'm always trying to think outside the box," Silva said.
The Cinnamon Roll Donut is not the only tasty treat available on the Catch desert menu. The restaurant, which is in NYC's meatpacking district, also offers Sticky Coconut Cake, S'mores Pizza, sorbert, a banana crème brûlée and the "Hit Me" Chocolate Cake.
Silva's contract with the resultant sadly ended, but Catch still offers the delectable treat.
