The new Harry Potter ride at Universal Studios Hollywood's Wizarding World of Harry Potter park seems to have cast a retching spell!
The new ride, called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, is apparently making people throw up.
The flight-simulating ride is an exact replica of the one at Universal Studios Orlando, except for the fact that it's in 3-D. A bunch of people got to test the new attraction ahead of its opening on April 7 but couldn't keep their food down.
"I just went on the Harry Potter ride and I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to be sick," tweeted one rider.
The ride consists of "magic benches," which "lift and sway, synchronized to the high-definition 3D images that are projected on wrap-around screens," which gives riders the feeling that they are flying with Harry as they avoid dragons and spiders.
Engineers are trying to resolve the issue, but they might have to trace the problem back to the original ride at Universal Orlando, which also has a reputation for inducing nausea and vomiting and has been described as the "king of motion-sickness rides" by Scott Smith, assistant hospitality professor at the University of South Carolina.
Several people have complained about the stomach-churning ride, and Beth Whiteside of Atlanta is one such unlucky rider. Whiteside sat through the ride soon after its launch at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando in 2010 and ended up vomiting twice.
"It was really, really bad," said Whiteside. "I ended up having to shut my eyes. I was still like, 'Oh, Lord, I'm not going to make it.'"
"Went on the ride inside hogwarts, got motion sick, almost puked, and then got traumatized by giant spiders" tweeted Shayna Louise in November.
Universal Orlando has reported 10 such cases of motion sickness suffered on the "Forbidden Journey."
"It moves people around in a way unlike any other ride in Orlando," said Seth Kubersky, author of The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter park at Universal Hollywood includes other attractions such as a rollercoaster called the Flight of the Hippogriff, The Hogwarts Castle, The Hogsmeade Village and the Three Broomsticks Pub.
