Lady Gaga added another tattoo to her collection. The pop star got tattooed Thursday with the 50 survivors who shared the stage with her during her emotional performance at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, and she shared photos and videos from the tattoo process on social media.
The 29-year-old "Applause" singer, who is a survivor of sexual assault herself, gave a moving performance of her Oscar-nominated song "Til It Happens To You," the song that she co-wrote with prolific songwriter Diane Warren for "The Hunting Ground," the 2015 documentary that exposes rape on college campuses. As a symbol of solidarity, Gaga got matching tattoos with the survivors who joined her onstage.
"The survivors on stage-including Lady Gaga-have gotten matching tattoos in solidarity. @ladygaga," Twitter user @elverurbina1 wrote, sharing a collage of various survivors, including Gaga, showing off their new ink.
Tattoo artist David Allen shared a photo of himself posing with Lady Gaga after he finished tattooing a symbol of "unity" on her left shoulder, featuring ornate, thin black lines at the top that get darker and bolder towards the bottom of the design.
"Honored to tattoo a symbol of 'unity' on @ladygaga today. An image of solidarity for survivors of sexual assault," Allen wrote on Instagram.
Gaga chronicled her tattoo process in a series of photos and videos on Snapchat. She listened to The Beatles' "Come Together" as she sat for her tattoo, and she later shared a close up shot of the piece with the caption "already healed."
She's also been sharing photos from her experience at the Oscars all week on Instagram, uploading photos with various unnamed sexual assault survivors and writing about her gratitude for how much support and love she's received, which helped give her the courage to perform the song.
In one photo, Mother Monster stood in a stairwell surrounded by the 50 survivors while waiting to take the stage, and one survivor held her arm up, showing off the message written on her arm, "It's On Us."
"Tears and hugs, matching tattoos and pictures, storytelling and encouragement," Gaga captioned the shot. "These survivors represented for others all over the world and I was so honored to be up there with them. 50+me= 51 #tilithappenstoyou."
