Charlie Sheen has had to request a change in the amount of child support he pays to his ex after his income has declined. Formerly the star of popular sitcom "Two And A Half Men," Sheen has argued that he no longer makes enough to keep up the monthly $55,000 payments.
Sheen pays the money to Brooke Mueller, his ex-wife and the mother of his 6-year-old twin sons Bob and Max. He also has two children with actress Denise Richards, but he is looking to modify only the payments to Mueller under their divorce settlement.
The actor recently sold his rights to "Two And A Half Men" for $27 million but is unable to keep up with payments worked out during his time on the show, where he was getting paid up to $613,000 per month. Sheen now earns a relatively smaller $87,384 on average and claims that the difference in earning is making it difficult to keep up with child support.
In addition to his loss of income, Sheen recently revealed that he has been diagnosed as HIV-positive and spends $25,000 a month on medical costs that are not covered by his insurance. He has claimed that his legal fees are close to $1 million, with $705,000 going towards other bills, fees and debts.
Sheen appeared to criticize his ex-wives in an interview with Dr. Oz for expecting him to maintain monetary support that was agreed upon in a time when he was earning significantly more, complaining that "we came up with a number a long time ago and I had a great job and everybody was living large" and that "there's still that expectation to still keep paying this kind of money."
"At some point you can't justify it, especially when there's no gratitude behind it," Sheen told Dr. Oz in the interview. "I would send somebody flowers every hour if I got that kind of dough tax free."
Mueller and Sheen's children are currently under the care of Richards due to being removed from Mueller's home by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services last May. Mueller is undergoing treatment for prescription drug abuse and was stated by her representative to looking forward to getting back to "being a mom."
