The Tennessee Titans finished the 2015 regular season tied for the worst record in the NFL, but new general manager Jon Robinson has a plan in building a strong foundation in Tennessee and knows that the top overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft will have a major impact on the future of the franchise.
Robinson has hinted that the offensive line with the first pick in the draft, and multiple mock drafts have projected the Titans to land Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil with the first pick in the draft. Tunsil could make a strong fit with the Titans in 2016 and would allow former first round pick offensive tackle Taylor Lewan to move to the other side of the offensive line at right tackle.
While the move would give Tennessee two strong bookend tackles on their offensive line, the Titans general manager is keeping his options open and hasn't ruled out a potential trade, although he expects a lot in return for the top pick.
"There is a group of players that are at the top of the draft, that you don't want to move back too far cause you can miss out on one of those guys, and if you do move back that far you want to make sure that you have a king's ransom, for a lack of a better term, to move that far," Robinson said. "I would say that for us to move out of that pick, it's going to take a substantial amount of picks to do that."
The Titans could look to fill their cupboard with picks, and it doesn't seemed to far fetched an idea, especially given his history scouting for the New England Patriots. Robinson has seen first hand what it takes to build a consistent contender with his time in New England, and with multiple needs heading into the 2016 season, a trade could make sense.
The Titans general manager clearly won't settle, though, as he knows the importance of protecting their young franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Titans franchise quarterback missed the final two games of the season with a MCL sprain, and solidifying Tennessee's offensive line is clearly a top priority for Robinson. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds, as the 2016 NFL Draft is almost a month away, but expect the Titans general manager to keep his cards close to his chest, as multiple teams could be interested in trading for the number one overall pick.
