Telltale Games, the developer company behind last year's immensely popular "Walking Dead" episodic game series, has officially confirmed the rumors that began earlier last week that it is developing a game with similar play-style to "The Walking Dead" but set in George R.R. Martin and HBO's "Game of Thrones" storytelling world.
The developer will collaborate with HBO for the episodic series, due out in 2014 according to reports from IGN. Telltale says its new game will be similar to other Telltale games but will feature "big battles" done "in a Telltale way." Anyone who has played "The Walking Dead" games will understand the unique play style the developers are talking about bringing to Game of Thrones. While the game does have many fast-paced action moments, it's mostly a slow micro decision making engine.
So far details about the plot or characters that will appear in the game are scarce. Luckily George R.R. Martin's Westeros is an extensive world with many characters. The only real question is whether or not it will feature playable characters we know from the show or if it will create a new crop of people to give the player control of like in "The Walking Dead."
A "Game of Thrones" collaboration with HBO wasn't the only news from Telltale this weekend. The developer also announced a similar episodic series coming in 2014 based on another game series form developer Gearbox. "Borderlands 2" has become a popular series thanks to its end-game content and DLC packages. Now Telltale will expand the game's characters and story. It will include existing characters in the Borderlands universe and new ones, some of whom will be "wanna-be Vault Hunters" according to Gearbox head Randy Pitchford.
The game will be titled "Tales from the Borderlands" and is "very much in Borderlands world" but will contain the typical game play from Telltale, which has promised it to be "big and bombastic."
