Demi Lovato has always been vocal about struggling with eating disorders and bipolar but she opened up for the very first time about her drug addiction. The 21-year-old singer told "Access Hollywood" about her struggles with cocaine and how she kept her drug problem hidden from everyone around her, including a sober companion who traveled and lived with her.
"Something I've never talked about before, but my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs," she said during the interview on Monday, Dec. 9. "I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes."
"I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there," she continued. "I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it."
Lovato said she realized her life was on a downward spiral at 19-years-old and knew she needed to make some serious changes. She revealed that besides her heavy drug use she was also abusing alcohol, and sometimes would start drinking as early as 9 a.m.
"I had a moment where I was like, 'Oh my God... that is alcoholic behavior,'" she said. "[It's] no longer, 'I'm young and rebellious and having fun,' it was, 'Wow, I'm one of those people... I gotta get my shit together."
Lovato wasn't the only opening up about past struggles. Her mother, Dianna Hart, told "Access Hollywood" that she also suffered with eating disorders and it was her daughter who pushed her to seek help.
"I had issues I needed to work on as well because I wasn't setting a good example for her," Hart said. "I had a terrible eating disorder that I had for many, many years and I didn't realize it and I had to face up to the fact that I was suffering as well. And a lot of what [Demi] went through with an eating disorder had to do with what she had seen growing up."
