Melissa McCarthy may be one of the biggest comedy actresses in Hollywood, but now she is trying out another profession - chef.
McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, who directed and co-wrote her upcoming film “The Boss,” stopped by “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Tuesday night where the couple revealed they are huge fans of the Food Network reality show “Chopped” and love to watch it with their daughters. Colbert agreed that the show is great and also said he is “obsessed” with it as well.
“I would love to be on it,” the actress told Colbert.
Fortunately, it was her and her husband’s lucky day. While “The Late Show” did not have the time to host an entire episode of the Food Network show, Colbert proposed his own version of the cooking competition called “Smooshed.” Just like the name suggests, Colbert’s show had the contestants smoosh all the usual components of an hour-long episode of “Chopped” into just one minute.
Each competitor was given a basket of mystery ingredients that contained salted crackers, marshmallows and bacon bits, along with a “pantry” full of “whatever we could find in the break room fridge.” “The Late Show’s” version of “Chopped” saw McCarthy go head-to-head with her husband, and the winner got to pick a charity for Colbert’s Americone Dream Fund to donate money. The couple only got one minute to create a culinary masterpiece, pulling their ingredients together to create a couple of disgusting looking dishes.
Falcone’s dish ended up being a take on s’mores, but used saltines instead of graham crackers while the middle was made out of bacon, marshmallow and “just a little bit of pickle for taste.” The host bravely ate the dish, which he described as “both tart and dry at the same time.”
While Falcone’s dish may not have tasted the best, his presentation was better than his wife’s, who gave Colbert a dish she called “a Tuscan-influenced rustic hash” that was made up of baloney mixed with mayo, marshmallow, pickles and crackers and was served with a soup ladle.
“My bouche is more than amused. My bouche is infuriated at this point. It’s shocked,” Colbert joked when he tasted McCarthy’s dish. “It’s chagrined and somewhat humiliated.”
