'Catfish' Star Nev Schulman Slammed For Racist Tweet

"Catfish" star Nev Schulman is currently under fire for an offensive and racist comment that he made Tuesday night during BET's "Black Girls Rock."

During the show, the producer of the popular MTV show took to Twitter to write, "#BlackGirlsRock I totally agree. They also tend to #catfish a lot. Just sayin'." The tweet has since been deleted.

Shortly after he wrote this for the entire social media world to see, he received a lot of backlash for the controversial tweet. One user named Cici, with the username @melaninporn, reached out to him and directly addressed the issue, which offended people of color, and this caused the 31-year-old producer to apologize for his comment.

"Thank u @melaninporn for taking the time to help me understand some of the issues POC deal w/," he wrote. "Sorry to all I upset."

Along with the tweet was a screenshot of the message Cici had sent him which read, "I just really want you to read the thread and understand Nev. As a fan of the show and as someone who has spent two years catfishing due to hate, I found it hurtful. Thank you, however, for taking the time to apologize and learn from your mistakes, you're only human and you have no idea what it means to be a woman of color so it's understandable. Just read it, and learn from it, I still support you."

Schulman than followed his first tweet up by apologizing once again and responding to a few of his fans. "You're right to be upset & don't have to accept my apology. But I am deeply sorry to those whom I offended and learned a valuable lesson," he wrote.

"This was an important lesson for me and hopefully can be one for a lot of other people too," he tweeted at one follower who gave him "props" for handling the situation in a mature way.

"Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with me tonight and promote communication and understanding," Schulman concluded. "Nothing but love and respect."

In 2014, Schulman caused some similar backlash on Twitter when he confirmed the rumor that he had been expelled from college for punching a female and condemned physical violence against women. At the time, he also had to issue an apology.

"In college, I was in a situation where I was forced to defend myself, after being suddenly attacked," he explained. "Charges were brought, but my case was almost immediately dismissed as this was clearly a case of self-defense. My post was meant to raise awareness and support for everyone affected by the awful abuses of domestic violence."
