If you haven't noticed, Hollywood is absolutely obsessed with superhero team ups these days. The "Avengers" series, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Captain America: Civil War"- everywhere you look, multiple capes are being stuffed into a single movie.
You know who wants to get in on the fun? Deadpool. Who does he want to team up with? Spider-Man.
The creative team behind 20th Century Fox's surprise smash hit "Deadpool" is together in Los Angeles this week to promote the upcoming Blue-ray release of their $750 million (and counting) movie. While there, producer Simon Kinberg was asked if the Merc with the Mouth could ever team up with the wall-crawler.
"I would love to see it," Kinberg said. "Both of us are close with Marvel's Kevin Feige, we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way 'cause we'd would love to see it...I just don't know if it would be possible."
Kinberg is right to be hesitant. Such a pairing between studios seems virtually impossible right now. Then again, it wasn't that long ago when fans believed they would never see Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel and Sony Pictures managed to work out a deal to share the rights to the character, and now here we all are.
However, it's important to note that that deal only emerged after "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" failed to jumpstart Sony's planned shared cinematic universe. Fox isn't nearly as desperate, as the X-Universe is still going strong after 16 years and "X-Men: Apocalypse" is sure to make a killing at the worldwide box office.
Could Fox come around? Sure, anything is possible. But what is much more likely to happen first is a deal to share the rights to the Fantastic Four characters. After two would-be franchises, Fox has yet to produce a well-received "Fantastic Four" movie. Should a partnership on that property become a reality, then maybe we can start talking about a Deadpool/Spider-Man crossover.
The two heroes have met several times in the comic books, with Spidey even fighting alongside Cable and the X-Force at times. It's not as if a meeting between the two is unprecedented. But for now, it's unrealistic to happen due to all of the red tape between the studios.
