Wednesday night was one of the best regular season days in the history of the NBA. Coming into the night, you just knew that it would be huge because it was Kobe Bryant's last NBA game, and the Golden State Warriors were going for win number 73 at the same time.
Although most of the talk after Wednesday night was about Kobe's epic final game, the bigger story is actually the Warriors picking up win number 73. By beating the Grizzlies, the Warriors broke the Chicago Bulls record for the most wins in a single season in NBA history. Obviously, breaking that type of record is reason to celebrate, but Draymond Green said that the team actually feels relieved.
"There is definitely a relief to just be finished with it," Green said. "It's kind of been a question probably because we got to 15-0, 14-0, and everybody was looking like oh, this where the '96 Bulls were."
The idea of the Warriors potentially breaking the record has been talked about since they got off to that record-breaking 24-0 start, but there were plenty of people that didn't think they could do it. Head coach Steve Kerr was of the mindset that he should rest players instead of going all out for the record, but Green was actually one of the more vocal players that insisted on giving it a go.
After the Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves at home last week, it seemed like their chances of getting the record were out the window, especially considering they still had to play the Spurs twice. At that point, Green admitted that the record storyline was getting to the Warriors and that they were kind of bored with it.
After those comments, though, the Warriors won their last four games and broke the record that many people believed was unbreakable. No matter what happens now, the Warriors will go down in history and is the best regular season team of all-time.
Now that the weight of breaking the record is off their shoulders, Golden State will focus on getting their second consecutive NBA title because, after all, that is always the ultimate goal. The Warriors open up the playoffs with a rematch of last year's Western Conference Finals against the Houston Rockets. You won't find many people that pick the Rockets to even win a game in that series, and overall, the Warriors will be heavy favorites throughout the entirety of the playoffs.
