It has been one very challenging year for "Teen Mom 2" star Leah Messer. The young mother opened up about her decision to enter a rehab program for depression and anxiety and opened up to Steve Harvey on his talk show about the entire ordeal.
"I knew I was suffering from something. I didn't know what it was. I just knew that I was suffering and I needed help," Messer told Harvey on Monday's episode. "I was on the depression and anxiety track. [I'm focused on] doing it the right way and being able to have that platform to teach girls to do it the right way, and that's what matters to me."
The 23-year-old is the mother to three daughters, twins Aliannah and Aleeah, 6, and Adalynn, 3. The reality star, who first appeared on MTV's "16 and Pregnant," entered a 30-day program last summer, even though many people close to her did not want her to go. The entire situation played out on season 6 of "Teen Mom 2."
"It took me quite some time to know whether I was gonna go or not," she explained to the TV host. "I'm from West Virginia, and everyone that I was around didn't quite support me going away. They didn't think it was good."
"I knew I was suffering from something. I didn't know what it was. I just knew that I was suffering and I needed help," Messer continued as she fought back tears.
While on the show, Messer also opened up about her custody battle with her ex Corey Simms, who is the father of her two twins. Tensions used to be high between her and the father of two of her children, but the MTV star revealed she and Simms were "in a much better place than we were" and "have been co-parenting really well."
Messer was not the only "Teen Mom 2" star to appear on "The Steve Harvey Show" on Monday; Messer's costar Kailyn Lowry was also a guest on the show, and the two opened up about the social media scrutiny that they receive.
"You know, sometimes we just want to be like everybody else and think of ourselves as people who are not on TV," Lowry said. "We want to do our own thing, but at the end of the day if we post one picture on Instagram we might cause World War III with 10,000 comments, you know?"
"Teen Mom 2" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
