Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for "Star Wars: Episode VIII."
J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" highlighted the question of who Rey is, and Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII" is expected to answer it. Coming out of the first film, audiences still had no idea where Daisy Ridley's character came from or who her parents were. But given the intentional mystery surrounding those questions and Rey's uncanny connection to the Force, it was obvious that her backstory would prove to be important.
Today comes a new unconfirmed rumor that claims to have "leaked" plot details concerning Rey's lineage and origin. Again, this report is unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of midichlorians.
A Reddit user posted several key bits of information, reportedly gleamed from the film set itself, regarding the upcoming movie. The report includes a purported title, "Star Wars: Echoes of the Dark Side," and a story structure that focuses on Kylo Ren, Finn and Rey.
One complaint that "Star Wars" fans had with "The Force Awakens" was that it was too similar to "A New Hope." According to the Reddit user, "Episode VIII" won't be exactly the same as "The Empire Strikes Back," though there will be familiar beats. The story will reportedly begin with Rey starting her Jedi training under Luke Skywalker. Poe Dameron and Finn will be on a separate mission in a setting that sounds a lot like Lando Calrissian's Cloud City.
However, that mission will go awry when they are captured by Kylo Ren and used to draw Rey out of hiding. Before she goes, Luke reveals the truth to Rey about her origins.
"Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker," the report reads. "Luke went to the first Jedi temple to better understand how the process works. He learned that the spirit of the chosen one is reincarnated by the Force every time the universe is thrown out of balance, which apparently happens on a semi-regular basis...This is why she's so crazy powerful with the Force....Rey was the product of a virgin birth, but midichlorians aren't mentioned...Luke is hesitant to train her because, according to Jedi history, the chosen one always struggles with staying on the light side of the Force because of the chaotic power running through them. He's afraid that she could become Vader 2.0."
The post has several other interesting details about the plot of "Star Wars: Episode VIII," but these are the biggest reveals. Whether or not they turn out to be accurate remains to be seen.
