Though season two of Marvel's Netflix series "Daredevil" wasn't as well received as the first, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/Punisher was considered a major highlight. The rogue anti-hero is a fan favorite comic book character, and Bernthal's take was lauded as the best on-screen representation following two failed movie franchises with Punisher as the lead. Now, he's getting his own television series.
That's right, Marvel has ordered a spin-off show featuring Bernthal's Punisher following the overwhelmingly positive response to his introduction in "Daredevil's" second season. A solo show for the character was rumored a few months back, but now it is official.
Bernthal will return to the role of the vengeance-seeking Frank Castle, who doles out fatal justice to criminals in Hell's Kitchen. Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot ("Hannibal," "Casualty") will serve as showrunner.
"Marvel's The Punisher" will be the sixth series Netflix has nabbed from the comic book studio. Along with the aforementioned "Daredevil," Netflix has already produced one season of "Jessica Jones," is in production on "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist," and will begin filming the ensemble miniseries "The Defenders" later this year. It's unknown if Bernthal will be added to "The Defenders" roster, though we'd assume he'd appear in the miniseries in some capacity.
Though no specific details are known about the Punisher standalone series, Marvel did release the first teaser image for the new show:
