Police say that a man has been arrested after one woman was killed and a 9-year-old girl was injured following a stabbing and fire early Wednesday morning in the South Bronx.
A 55-year-old man, who remains unnamed, went on a stabbing spree on Wednesday inside an eighth-floor apartment at the St. Mary's Houses at East 156th Street, leaving a 60-year-old woman dead and a 9-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds, according to the New York City Police Department.
Police were notified of the situation and arrived at the apartment in the Melrose section around 5:30 a.m. They quickly cornered the man, prompting him to stab himself before lighting the apartment on fire. Firefighters responded and put out the the fire, which blew out the windows of the apartment.
The girl managed to flee the apartment with stab wounds on her left leg and left shoulder. She was rushed to Lincoln hospital in stable condition.
The woman, believed to be the girl's grandmother, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lastly, the suspect, who was found with a stab wound to his chest, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and is in custody. It's unclear what charges he will face once released.
With all those related to the incident either dead or in the hospital, police are now left with the task of trying to figure out what happened. The investigation is ongoing as they work to determine what prompted the apparent domestic attack.
This isn't the first time that the Bronx has been subject to seemingly tragic incidents such as this one. In October of last year, a woman was arrested and charged with murder after she threw her infant child out the window of her sixth-floor apartment on Tiebout Avenue near E. 182nd St. in Fordham. Before the child was dropped to the streets below, witnesses reported the mother making cryptic statements such as, "Praise the lord," and "Hallelujah." Police soon arrived on the scene and found her naked on the apartment floor surrounded by her other children, who were also naked. Upon arresting her, the mother said, "the devil is in her."
