Google Celebrates Winter Solstice With 'Knitted' Doodle

Google marked the official First Day of Winter otherwise known as "Winter Solstice," the year's shortest day and longest night, with a knitting doodle.

Google is following its usual trend of celebrating major events through its doodles. The web giant released a new doodle on its homepage Saturday, celebrating the First Day of Winter.

Most of us may have already been experiencing the chilly weather, but the web giant knows the best way to acknowledge the chill in the air, with its trademark doodle. The animated Doodle represents the First Day of Winter, otherwise known as Winter Solstice, which has the longest night and the shortest day in the year.

The Winter Solstice marks the official beginning of the winter, where the sun reaches to a point where it stops moving southward and starts moving north. The word "Solstice" comes from Latin words "sol" for sun and "sisto" for stop.

The animated Google Doodle was designed by German illustrator Christoph Niemann, which shows a scarf and a glove being knitted to form the search engine's logo.

The web giant has followed its tradition of doodles for a long time, they replace its colourful logo on the homepage with an interactive desgn resembling the occasion. Google has a dedicated team for the job that has created more than 1,000 doodles since 1998. Any ideas and inputs on doodles are welcome from anyone outside its team of doodlers.

The 2013 winter begins with the solstice at 12:11 P.M. on December 21 (EST). In some traditions solstice marks rebirth and is greeted with festivities
