Break the bad habits with 4 science backed formulas

There is hardly anyone in this world who is not struggling with a bad habit. All try to break their harmful habits, but it is not easy. It requires effort and hard work which is quite tedious and may cause one to give up. However, it becomes easier if one adopts a strategy and works according to it.

Fortunately, there are four effective strategies that can help one get rid of those undesirable habits, claims The Huffington Post. According to the publication, habits are not, in essence, a bad thing and help our bodies to get into the autopilot mode, which is an advantageous thing, from the evolutionary perspective. Still, it is not bereft of negativities and thus, one should know how to control them when they begin to give negative results.

The first effective strategy is substitution i.e. replacing the bad habit with a good one. For example, if one wants to break free from the habit of coffee consumption, one may replace it with herbal tea or juice. One needs to begin slowly and gradually the good habit takes a seat, eliminating the bad one completely.

The second one is quite tough but pretty rewarding and gives faster results. Called "Cold Turkey," it refers to complete cessation of the bad habit. It works by breaking the neural structures in the brain that take a seat because of engaging in the bad habit.

The third one is "consistency" and is also referred as "Seinfeld method" of productivity. It requires one to engage in a certain behavior or action, every day, without fail. The objective is to create a chain and stay committed. However, if the chain breaks, one has to start all over again, from the beginning.

The last brilliant formula is to refocus. This is to say that instead of falling into the trap and fighting with the route the bad habit compels us to take, one should look into a new direction and approach the situation intelligently. It is a practical strategy and helps to restructure our thinking, which eventually helps in dealing with the habit or a situation, in a constructive manner.
