Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy believes the Detroit Lions' head coaching vacancy is the most enticing NFL job available right now. Dungy appeared on The Dan Patrick Show on Friday and espoused the Lions job as "the best job out there," GridIron.com reports.
"I will tell you this, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions," Dungy said on Friday during The Dan Patrick Show, via GridironGrit.com. "That's the job I would want."
Dungy went on to explain why Detroit, which finished the season with a 7-9 record, is the job with the most upside.
"I think they're closest to the Super Bowl," Dungy said. "You look for a franchise quarterback in this day and age, you want to have a passing game because this game is all about passing, and you want people who can rush the passer and protect the lead. Detroit's got all that."
He also said the coach would have the benefit of not having to deal with a meddling owner like the Dan Snyders and Jerry Joneses of the NFL.
"...You've got an owner who doesn't know," Dungy added. "He's not going to come in and tell you, 'Play this guy, cut this guy, draft this guy.' It's a perfect situation. If I was ever coming back, it would be for that job."
Detroit fired Jim Schwartz on Monday after concluding the season with a 14-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions at one point sat atop the NFC North before collapsing down the stretch of the season and losing six of their seven last games.
CBS Sports reported earlier in the week that the Lions were interested in Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Gable and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.
Dungy's comments about the Lions happen around the 17-minute mark.
