Below are the latest updates for several NFL teams' head coach search, including the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins.
An ESPN report on Monday dismissed Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops as a candidate for the Browns' coaching job. Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is the latest coach the Browns are interested in speaking with, according to a report on Monday from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.
Detroit is eying San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to become their next coach. Whisenhunt, the former Arizona Cardinals coach from 2007 to 2012, is the frontrunner for the job.
"The Detroit Lions' head coaching job is Ken Whisenhunt's to lose, sources close to the situation told ESPN," NFL Insider Adam Schefter wrote on Sunday.
The Lions are also interested in Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, per Schefter's report. Detroit interviewed Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell on Friday, according to the team website.
Minnesota is expected to pursue interviews with Gruden, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, NFL.com's Albert Breer reported on Monday. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport also reported two sources as saying Zimmer plans to interview with the Vikings.
Tennessee became the latest team in need of a new head coach after firing Mike Munchak on Saturday. The Titans are interested in Gruden and Zimmer, according to Breer.
Washington is also interested Gruden, Zimmer and Roman. In addition, the Redskins plan to interview Franklin, according to Rapoport.
Other names floating around as potential head coach candidates in the NFL include New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, ex-Lions coach Jim Schwartz, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Gable, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
