The man responsible for bringing to life the iconic character of Darth Vader in the latest "Star Wars" standalone anthology film, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," reveals the challenges they had to overcome in showcasing Vader in the new movie.
Darth Vader and his overall menacing get up is perhaps one of the most iconic looks for any villain in movie history. One of the main things that sets him apart from other villains in the movie industry is his signature costume and of course his easily recognizable heavy breathing.
Veteran "Star Wars" visual effects supervisor, John Knoll, recently talked to Comicbook and explained that it took them quite a long time to finally come up with the final look for Darth Vader in the upcoming film. He explains that while most people think that Vader only has one signature look, the character apparently went through a lot of different costume changes throughout the original trilogy films.
Knoll further revealed that the first Vader in "A New Hope" was actually wearing a more rugged costume filled with imperfections and smudges because most of it was sculpted out of clay. The next movie, "Empire Strikes Back" featured him wearing a relatively more polished and smooth getup. For "Rogue One," Knoll and his team opted to go for something in between with an armor that incorporated the chest plate in the fourth movie and the high polish look of the fifth movie.
Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the Orsen Krennic as the main villain in the upcoming movie, also explained his take on his character's costume in a recent interview. He explains that the costume itself already takes him half way to his character's state of mind, in which he plays a high-ranking high-brow Imperial officer working alongside Darth Vader.
"That costume takes you a good half of the way there. You put that costume on, and you feel very upright and you feel a great sense of power in an outfit like that." Mendelsohn explained.
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on December 16, 2016.
