Qualcomm Announces Virtual Reality Development Kit (VRDK) for Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform

Qualcomm, the American multinational semi-conductor and telecommunication company introduced a new virtual reality development kit (VRDK). This VRDK kit is reported to be introduced for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform. Qualcomm teams up with Leap Motion to bring natural interaction to mobile VR and ultimately good news for the VR enthusiasts.

According to Qualcomm, this serves developers as an early access to the head mounted display with virtual reality development kit for the Snapdragon 835 mobile platform. The company claims that it is enhancing virtual reality application developers with advanced tools and technologies.

This will accelerate a new generation of VR games, 360-degree VR videos and a variety of interactive education, enterprise, healthcare and entertainment applications. Qualcomm also claims that rolling out an HMD Accelerator Program directly aims to lower the entry barrier for manufacturers looking to build VR products.

Qualcomm has introduced the VR development kit which includes the head mounted display (HMD). The HMD is powered by Snapdragon 835 and an upgraded VR software development kit. The HMD with VRDK is equipped with four megapixel 2560x1440 WQHD AMOLED display, six-degrees of freedom (6DoF) motion tracking, which includes two monochromatic cameras with fish-eye lenses, two monochromatic VGA global shutter cameras with depth sensing, and an integrated sensor IMU (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetic compass).

The HMD is loaded with 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB-C connectivity, Qualcomm's Aqstic audio codec, and a trackpad on the right side for controlling the interface. Also, it includes a Fast motion to photon, Stereoscopic rendering with lens correction, VR layering, and Advanced Application Profiling and Power management features.

It is also reported that Qualcomm will bring this technology at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco as well as Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Also, Qualcomm will not bring VRDK with HMD to the market as the VRDK itself will be available to developers in Q2 2017. Stay Tuned for more updates.
