Goodyear Introduces Self-driving AI Car Tires

With the world is still excited with the adoption of the electric car, Goodyear has decided to take this to another level by introducing AI-based spherical tires that can go in all directions. Though this is still at its conceptualization level, the company has definitely stirred some excitements in the self-driving car industry.

On March 1st, Goodyear has announced on its corporate website to introduce its spherical-shaped Eagle-360 and also Goodyear IntelliGrip concept tires. "Both tires are designed with safety in mind, which according to recent studies, is a key concern among consumers around autonomous vehicles. They reflect Goodyear's focus on anticipating the rapidly evolving needs of its customers." The company said in a statement.

Goodyear Eagle-360 is supposed to provide self-driving cars ultimate maneuverability, connectivity and biomimicry to increase safety. This means the car using these tires can move in all directions safely, embedded with an advanced sensor system, relies on a magnetic levitation system, and also behaves like a sponge to be in its form regardless of dry or wet condition.

As for Goodyear IntelliGrip, the concept is designed to communicate with autonomous vehicle control systems, sensing road surface and weather conditions for improved driving safety and performance. It incorporates road conditions sensor, active-wear technology, custom algorithms, road condition adaptation technology, and special features such as Electronic Stability Control Systems, Brake Control Systems, and Suspension Control Systems.

"By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tires will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road," said Joseph Zekoski, Goodyear's senior vice president and chief technical officer. "Goodyear's concept tires play a dual role in that future both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and test beds for next-generation technologies."

As reported by Charged, though the concepts may take years to materialize, however, it believes some of the ideas behind this Goodyear Eagle 360 Urban concept will be integrated into real tires in the near future.
