'How I Met Your Mother' Creators Haven't Finalized Script For Series Finale: 'It Means This Is Really Ending'

“How I Met Your Mother” creators are approaching the end of the series, but they haven’t exactly figured out how to wrap it up.

In an interview with IGN, show creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays talked about being in the final six weeks of production for the show, and they still aren’t sure how it will all end.

“We have a lot of ideas, and we're gathering ideas,” Bays told IGN. “We've sort of nailed down everything leading up to that final script, and we know what happens in the final script, but we haven't had the ‘Craig and Carter in a room’ time yet to really figure it out. I think part of it is, we're putting it off, because it means this is really ending.”

“We have an outline for it that we're still filling in,” Thomas added. “It's the last piece of the puzzle. Everything else is written, even the second to last episode. Carter and I basically have to lock the door in the next few days and really start cracking that episode. We've been stalling, because it's so tense.”

The series creators told IGN they are seeking perfection, a balance of moving and funny. Thomas referred to the “Cheers” finale as something he found to be “perfect” and inspirational for their series. As for the last slap of the series, the creators are still unsure as to how it will play out.

“I'll tell you another idea that we haven't really talked about in awhile, and we probably won't do this, but we may do it -- the end of the series, the series ends, and if you go to TheSlapBetCountdown.com, a new countdown comes up, and it's 25 years,” Bays told IGN. “Then in 25 years we'll reveal when the last slap happens”

The show creators even talked about the possibility of the final slap occurring in the “How I Met Your Father” spinoff series. Click here to read more of IGN’s interview with the show creators.
