Honey Consumption Increases Insulin And Brings Down Blood Sugar, Says UAE Study

Diabetes patients may consume honey in moderate amount as it offers to be a healthy substitute for sugar. A recent UAE study has found that honey brings down the sugar level in blood and also increases insulin level, which is helpful for diabetics.

Honey is a healthier alternative for diabetes patients and they can consume it in a moderate degree, reported Medical News Daily. In a study done by King Saud University in Dubai, it was found that participants who consumed honey experienced a rise in blood sugar but it also dropped down after a couple of hours. Also, the insulin level saw an increase which is a positive sign as insulin helps to break down carbohydrate.

Notably, the pancreas of people suffering from diabetes do not produce an adequate amount of insulin and thus, their bodies cannot digest sugar properly. So, if honey can help in increasing insulin, it is no less than a medicine but the flip side of honey is that it is denser than other types of refined sugar and also contains more carbohydrate and calories.

In such a scenario, it is advised to consume honey in moderate amount. Also, one should be aware of the fact that honey is blessed with antioxidants and fibers that have a positive impact on the overall health of a person. It has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties as well. What makes honey consumption more advisable is another study conducted by the University of Tehran.

This study, after an eight-week research, came to the conclusion that long-term honey consumption by type 2 diabetes people helps in weight loss and also brings down cholesterol level in blood. Other studies have also brought forward the benefits of honey and it is, in every way, beneficial for diabetics. The only thing that should be kept in mind is that the intake should be regulated and one should go for raw honey instead of processed one as the latter loses its nutritive contents during processing.
