Samsung tweeted the details of "Unpacked 2014 Episode 1" event at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Feb. 24, hinting at a possible launch of the rumored Galaxy S5 smartphone.
Contrary to several rumors of Samsung showing off its first Tizen OS-based smartphone at the Mobile World Congress, the tech giant has revealed details of hosting an event at Barcelona's 2014 MWC. In the usual Samsung tradition, the tweet from Samsung Mobile includes a snapshot of the details of the "Unpacked 5" event to be held in Barcelona, Feb. 24, 2014.
Samsung started the "Unpacked" event strategy mostly to showcase the new entries in its wide lineup of tech devices. The tech giant knows how to create an element of surprise before unveiling a new device. Galaxy S5 has been rumored to be the next product on Samsung's list for a long time, the event is likely to debut the most-awaited successor for the flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone. Samsung Galaxy S4 did not do too well in sales. The company also hit a record annual low on mobile profit growth in the past seven years. Competition from Apple and other Chinese smartphone makers played a key role in pushing the current flagship phone to the back shelves. The Korean phone maker has since been trying to turn the tables and revealed plans to rush the Galaxy S5 launch.
As for the Galaxy S5, the leaked details show a promising approach from Samsung to take on the mobile industry. It is widely speculated that the Galaxy S5 will feature a bigger screen than its predecessors, ranging from 5 to 5.2 inches. Some media sites also reported that an improved rear camera with 13-megapixel and functions like iris recognition or a fingerprint scanner are in the books. The RAM size may get a boost to 3GB or 4GB, which will be possible with the world's first 8 gigabit low power DDR4, along with 32 and 64GB optional space. The screen resolution is likely to be up to 1440 x 2560 pixels (2K) with 560 ppi and the latest 64-bit Exynos chipset or a Snapdragon processor on an Android 4.4 KitKat layer.
The Unpacked 5 event may not only showcase the Galaxy S5, some reports also have it that the tech giant will bring an improved Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Details for the possible changes on the Gear watch remain sketchy but a better battery will be welcomed. The event can also be live streamed from YouTube.
