Selena Gomez's rep confirmed that the 21-year-old "Come & Get It" singer completed a secret stint in rehab at the beginning of the year. According to Radar Online, Gomez voluntarily checked herself into Dawn at the Meadows in Arizona on Jan. 5 for a two-week stint.
There have been rumors that Gomez's hard partying contributed to the secret stint but her rep claims she did not enter because of substance abuse.
"Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse," her rep said in a statement.
According to their site, Meadows usually treats "emerging adults who struggle with emotional trauma, addiction or dual diagnosis concerns." Reportedly the pop star's parents were worried that she was clubbing too much and was on a downward spiral.
They insisted she seek help and get herself "cleaned up," Radar reports.
"With fame came a partying lifestyle," a source told the site.
"Her friends and family became increasingly worried that there might be a serious problem with Selena," a different source added. "Particularly, her parents [were worried]. The partying was, at times, wild. They wanted to help her - and they very much encouraged her to go to rehab. Others very close to her also urged her to seek professional help."
Even though the singer's rep said substance abuse was not involved, Radar claims that Gomez had started experimenting with marijuana and prescription drugs like Xanax and Ambien.
"It's important to remember that Selena had worked in Hollywood non-stop for six years," another source said. "She was exhausted. Selena was smart enough to understand that she needed to take control of her life."
"It just got to a point where she needed to get out of Los Angeles, get away from 'the scene' and the pressure of Hollywood, to also get away from those who had, admittedly, become a bad influence on her," the source said.
According to several reports, Gomez has been struggling since her breakup with Justin Bieber.
