General Hospital actor Steve Burton has filed for divorce from wife Sheree Gustin after 23 years of marriage, two months after initially disclosing their separation.
Via TMZ, the 52-year-old actor gave the reason for the breakup as irreconcilable issues and gave March 1 as the date of separation. In May, Burton announced on his Instagram story that he and Gustin had split up after she discovered she was having a baby with someone else.
Aside From Divorce, Steve Burton Leaves 'General Hospital'
Burton and Gustin got married in January 1999 and have three kids together: Brooklyn Faith, 8, Makena Grace, 18, and Jack Marshall, 16. Fans were shocked when the actor revealed his breakup with Gustin on his Instagram story in May.
The breakup also occurred months after it became public knowledge that he had been dismissed from his long-running role as Jason Morgan on General Hospital for disobeying the show's COVID-19 vaccination requirement.
He began performing in that part in 1991; and in 1998, he was honored with a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In the end, he quit General Hospital in 2012 and moved on to The Young and the Restless, where in 2017, he received another Daytime Emmy.
Later that year, he announced that he would be going back to General Hospital, where he remained until his termination in November. Burton's termination ultimately hurt the relationship, according to a People article that appeared a few days after Burton announced the breakup.
Sheree has not responded to the allegations; her most recent Instagram photo showed her posing on the beach in a one-piece bathing suit.
Steve received the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Daytime Emmy Award in 1998. He has had appearances in several movies, TV shows, and video games in addition to his tenure on the soap opera.
He also appeared in 2001's The Last Castle and the sci-fi miniseries Taken. Steve does the voices for both the Final Fantasy and the Kingdom Hearts video game series.
Burton left General Hospital in 2012 to start a stint on The Young and the Restless, another soap opera. Up until 2016, he played Dylan McAvoy on the show, winning another Daytime Emmy. In June of the following year (2017, General Hospital), he made his way back to his job there. The actor acknowledged in 2021 that he had been sacked from the show due to his anti-vax stance.
Steve Burton Joins New Soap Opera
"Hey! I wanted you to hear it from me. I love and appreciate all of you!" Burton wrote alongside a video of himself outlining the reasons he had been fired.
Their lives were affected as he went through some turmoil and fury about what he perceived as his freedoms being at risk, a source on the TV star's upheavals claimed, adding that the insider Sheree had been unhappy leading up to the breakup and was yearning for something more, The Sun reported.
Burton recently started working on a brand-new soap opera series that will return for a second season later this month. When Days of Our Lives returns on July 11, Burton will make an appearance in the Days of Our Lives spinoff Beyond Salem, according to Deadline. From 1991 until 2012 and again from 2017 to 2021, Burton starred as Jason Morgan on General Hospital, where he spent the most of his soap opera career. From 2013 through 2017, he also played Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.
Notably, Burton will reprise his role as Harris Michaels from the last seasons of Days of Our Lives in Beyond Salem. "I don't know. You have to ask Ron Carlivati and Albert. From what I gather, Peacock's happy with this, and NBC's happy with this. But if the opportunity's there, yes. I never say never," Burton responded when asked if his new job may lead to him joining Days of Our Lives permanently, as per Pop Culture.
