President Joe Biden stated on Wednesday that he would take a variety of executive initiatives to tackle climate change.
Biden's executive actions come after Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., reportedly stated that he will not support any package before the midterm elections that include any energy or climate provisions, with his spokesperson telling Fox News Digital that Manchin wants to avoid adding fuel to the inflation fire.
Biden Lays Out Climate Executive Action
Biden's executive actions also include an effort to reduce cooling costs for communities suffering from extreme heat, as the White House is issuing guidance to assist states, tribes, and territories in funding for community cooling centers and assisting people in their communities in obtaining access to the cooling equipment.
Furthermore, the Biden administration will look at possible wind power projects in the Gulf of Mexico, such as those planned off the coasts of Galveston, Texas, and Lake Charles, Louisiana. According to the White House, the projects have the potential to power nearly three million households with sustainable energy.
In addition, Biden has directed the Secretary of the Interior to accelerate sustainable energy projects off the coastlines of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to ensure that these southeast states may benefit from good-paying employment in the expanding offshore wind sector, as per Fox News.
For the time being, those moves will be modest: Biden's administration will pave the way for additional offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, he stated during a visit to a former coal-burning power plant in Somerset, Massachusetts. In addition, the government would invest $2.3 billion to strengthen communities' climate change defenses and make it simpler for low-income households to acquire energy-efficient air conditioners to withstand sweltering heat.
These are significantly fewer measures than he promised when he ran for President two years ago when he pledged to put the United States at the forefront of the worldwide fight to prevent global warming. Biden stated that tackling the greenhouse gases that are warming the earth is one of his top concerns, along with combating the pandemic.
However, those aspirations were crushed last week when Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) voted against spending $300 billion to boost renewable energy subsidies. Furthermore, the Supreme Court last month placed legal constraints on the federal government's ability to limit carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, the second largest source of greenhouse gas.
POTUS Recalls Getting Cancer From Delaware Pollution
His remarks come as more than 100 million Americans experience 100-degree heat and European nations confront record heat. The Western United States is experiencing the greatest megadrought in 1,200 years, causing reservoirs to dry up and reducing the flow of the Colorado River, which feeds water to tens of millions of people.
Biden was sweating as he delivered his address on a hot afternoon in southern Massachusetts, the second day of a heat wave that has pushed cities across the state to establish cooling facilities for citizens and proclaim heat emergencies. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Representative Bill Keating (D-Mass.) wore black baseball hats to protect themselves from the sun, Politico reported.
During a significant address on climate change, Biden also recounted how pollution in Delaware got him and numerous others cancer, but he stopped short of declaring a national emergency. Biden stated that he grew up near Claymont, Delaware, which is home to several oil refineries.
Before becoming president, Biden had numerous non-melanoma skin tumors removed. Dr. Kevin O'Connor indicated in his report on Biden's November 2021 physical that the president is still being examined for lesions. In his speech on climate change, Biden blasted Republicans for stifling his green agenda and suggested that he would declare a national emergency on the topic soon - but he stopped short of meeting Democratic demands for an urgent declaration.
Speaking at the Brayton Point Power Station, New England's largest coal plant, which is being converted into a factory creating cables for offshore wind farms, Biden blamed Republicans for the inability of Congress to act on climate change rather than Manchin, according to Daily Mail.
Manchin torpedoed the president's green agenda on Capitol Hill when he said he could not support billions of dollars in new climate spending as part of a larger economic package, but Biden focused on his political rivals.
