Ryan Grantham, a former 'Riverdale' actor, was sentenced to life in prison after confessing to killing his mother in March 2020.

The disgraced actor, 24, admitted in March of this year that he had shot his mother in the back of the head while she was practicing the piano in their Vancouver townhouse. He was charged with second-degree murder.

At the British Columbia Supreme Court, Grantham was given a life sentence with no chance of parole for the first 14 years. A GoPro footage that was shot soon after the murder was played in court. Grantham admitted to the killing and displayed his mother's body in it.

The ex-child star is alleged to have draped a sheet over the body and hanged a rosary from the piano the day after the murder on March 31, 2020. He drove himself to the police station later that evening and turned himself up. Grantham allegedly wrote about his intentions to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a diary and then confessed to the police in a statement, as per Mirror.

The only point on which his lawyers may disagree was the length of time he would have to serve before becoming eligible for parole under Canadian law, which automatically imposes, The punishment for second-degree murder is a life sentence. Back in June, they claimed that because Grantham had acknowledged his guilt and exhibited remorse, he should be eligible for parole after serving 12 years.

The federal government countered that he should serve 17 to 18 years. However, according to CBC, British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Ker decided on Wednesday that the actor should only serve 14 years because of his downward spiral in the months before the murder.

She observed that Grantham was sincere in his apology and was pursuing mental health treatment in prison, where staff members were complimentary of his demeanor and development. The fact that Grantham had a strong enough connection to reality and understanding to decide without carrying out a mass murder or assassinating the prime minister was also hailed by Ker as a saving grace.

Ryan Grantham tried making Molotov cocktails after that, bought beer and marijuana, watched Netflix, and then draped a sheet over his mother's corpse before going to bed. The following morning, according to Grantham, he loaded his car with three weapons, ammo, a dozen Molotov cocktails, camping equipment, and directions to Trudeau's Rideau Cottage in Ottawa before hanging a rosary on Waite's piano and placing lighted candles around her body.

Before changing his mind and considering conducting an act of mass murder at Simon Fraser University, where he had dropped out, he had intended to travel more than 50 hours to assassinate Trudeau.

Before hurting anyone else, he reported himself to the Vancouver police, and in March he admitted to second-degree murder. In the wake of the incident, prosecutors claimed that Grantham shot his mother to death to save her from witnessing the development of his assassination plot against the prime minister of Canada.

According to the psychological assessments, Grantham had despair, self-hatred, a cannabis use disorder, and homicidal and suicidal thoughts months before the murder, Daily Mail reported.
