If they win the House in November, Republicans might try to impeach President Joe Biden, a South Carolina congressman said on Sunday.
During an interview with NBC's Meet the Press, Nancy Mace made this statement, surprising Chuck Todd with a "wow." However, the representative made no indication that she would be in favor of such a proposal.
Republicans Consider a Vote to Impeach Biden
Mace made the opposite suggestion, telling Todd that she would concentrate on waste, fraud, and abuse in a GOP-controlled House-typical problems falling under the scope of congressional oversight.
After criticizing former president Donald Trump for his part in the attack on Congress on January 6, the South Carolina Republican was able to win the general election this year despite facing a primary challenge from Donald Trump himself. However, she opposed the 2021 House vote to remove Trump from office in the wake of the assault.
Up until now, far-right Republicans in the GOP, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, have been the main proponents of Joe Biden's impeachment. Given the zero chance that the Senate would vote to condemn Biden in the absence of compelling evidence of wrongdoing, such a bill would have a limited future.
To date, at least publicly, neither Republican leaders in the House nor the Senate have indicated interest in or support for pursuing impeachment. It's telling that those who embrace the idea haven't even identified a single alleged transgression for which the president should be removed from office.
Hunter Biden's business dealings in Ukraine and abroad have been cited by some, including Greene, as justification for seeking his impeachment, claiming that Biden was involved in a kickback scheme. Others have brought up border security as a matter that would result in impeachment instead, including Sen. Ted Cruz, as per The Independent.

GOP Releases Agenda if They Take House Majority
An outline of the House Republican leadership's policies, titled Commitment to America, were released last week. The COVID-19 pandemic's origins and the Biden administration's handling of the US pullout from Afghanistan are mentioned in the agenda, which calls for rigorous scrutiny to rein in government abuse of power and corruption, but it doesn't specify how Republicans will go about doing so.
Mace stated on Sunday that rather than following that rabbit down the hole of Republican potential impeachment proceedings, she would like to maintain the focus on lowering inflation and enhancing the economy, The Hill reported.
Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, have also suggested that President Joe Biden should be removed from office. Ten House Republicans who defected from their party to join House Democrats were a part of the bipartisan push to impeach Donald Trump.
Having won the GOP primary in June over Katie Arrington, a candidate sponsored by Donald Trump, Mace has endorsed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. After the attack on January 6, Mace, who worked on Trump's presidential campaign, denounced him, according to USA Today.
