With over $70 million in allotted funding, the majority of Oregonians who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will get additional emergency payments in December.
Since March 2020, monthly emergency assistance allocations have been authorized by the federal government. Because of this, SNAP beneficiaries received more assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oregon's Enhanced SNAP Benefits Payments
These SNAP benefits will be provided until at least January 2023. But it is anticipated to expire once the nationwide health emergency stopped, as per MSN.
In addition to their usual SNAP payments, some 426,000 SNAP households will get an additional $70 million in food assistance in December.
Jana McLellan, interim director of the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Self-Sufficiency Programs, said, "We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to purchase enough healthy food for themselves and their family."
For many Oregonians who are still struggling to meet their basic requirements, the Christmas season can add to their stress and concern. "We encourage them to get in touch with our partners at 211, the Oregon Food Bank, and their local Community Action Agency for assistance during this trying time."
On December 13, current SNAP families will receive emergency benefit allocations. Families that do not get payments in the first monthly distribution will get them on December 30 or January 4, 2023.
According to Oregon Live, the 426,000 households in Oregon who receive SNAP benefits get the increased payouts.
When the federal government determines that the COVID-19 public health emergency has ended, the higher benefits are anticipated to stop as well.
The Department of Human Services must be updated by Oregonians who receive SNAP benefits if their family composition or income has changed, the agency stated, since these changes may have an impact on the amount of benefits received.
In Oregon, each household receives around $200 in SNAP benefits each month.
