The first NYC murder led to a man who died defending his girlfriend when a random argument ended his life on New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve Murder in New York

A man defended his girlfriend during a tumultuous scene after a night of revelry in the Bronx, that resulted in New York City's first murder of the year.

At a close friend's New Year's Eve party where alcohol was being served, Sergio Garcia, 63, was there with his 38-year-old girlfriend when an argument reportedly broke out. As said by Garcia's ex-wife, the festivities were wrecked, reported NY Daily News.

The ex-wife, Yamely Hernandez, relayed what happened when she got to the hospital, she said that he wanted to take her home and added the woman got boozed up early.

The pair pushed their way to the woman's residence on College Ave. close to E. 170th St. in Claremont, where Garcia was residing. They had a squabble and the girlfriend stormed out of the apartment at 3:50 am, citing The Local.

He told her to stay inside and that he will just stay in the van. Then people began recording them. However, Garcia's girlfriend got angrier and broke the van's window because she threw something, but tried to make her less mad.

The girlfriend saw a woman in a group taking a video and got into fisticuffs with the woman recording. This time, Garcia tried to help her. Hernandez added that five people were coming for the girlfriend and Garcia was not really involved in the fight.

Man Dies Defending Girlfriend on New Year's Eve

Police initially stated that the victim was stabbed in the chest, but Hernandez thinks he was struck in the neck. She added that a man knifed Garcia in the neck artery and his girlfriend under the breasts. As said by police, Garcia was able to get into the van and take them to BronxCare Health System, which was about a half mile down the road, but it was too late for Garcia, citing NY Post.

Garcia passed away at the hospital, where his ex-wife subsequently made a visit to his girlfriend, who affirmed that the argument became out of control and that the night turned chaotic. She continued by saying that he wanted to leave but was afraid of what she might do. It's hard to comprehend that he's gone.

The deceased was formerly well-known in the Dominican Republic for his athletic prowess. He was selected for the national squad of the Caribbean nation throughout 1984.

Her ex-husband kept playing basketball with young people in the Bronx and Manhattan when he was still active. Hernandez and Garcia had a daughter, age 8, and the man also looked after a stepson, age 17. She added at the start of their relationship and an angel in her life. As a father; he takes good care of their kids. Police are still desperately looking for those personally liable for the brutal killing.
