New York Cop Responds to After-School Brawl

Police announced Wednesday that an NYPD officer had been suspended after he was seen on surveillance footage punching a 12-year-old girl while attempting to break up an after-school fight on Staten Island.

The department's Internal Affairs Bureau is now probing the altercation after a video of an officer repeatedly punching a kid in the head while also attempting to drag the girl away from the police popped up on social networks, noted Twitter.

The incident occurred as cops decided to respond to a fight among kids at a bus stop on Willowbrook Road and Forest Ave., close to the Edwin Markham Middle School in Port Richmond, at approximately 2:40 p.m. The authorities said this on Tuesday, reported NY Daily News.

In the fight between those involved, the two sisters, 12 and 14, had been beating up a 14-year-old girl. The girls assaulted a cop as he tried to break up the fight.

NYPD managed to learn of an occurrence on Staten Island in which police acted swiftly as young people were seen engaging in fisticuffs, according to a tweet posted early Wednesday morning.

Officers noted that the deeds of that personnel are now under inquiry by the Internal Affairs Bureau. However, one officer has been reprimanded in the meantime, citing CBS News.

NYP Officer Repeatedly Punches Teen Girl

In a video posted online, the officer repeatedly hit a girl with long red braids. Even as the girl tried to move away from the police officer and turned away, the cop hit her approximately nine times. The footage shows that she traded a few jabs with the cop before flopping her arms and trying to run from the police. One of the girls was heard shouting that the cop was striking hard.

The cops were stationed at a nearby stationary dismissal post, so they could respond whenever help was needed at a bus stop a block away from the school.

Based on sources that disclosed when one of the girls hit the policeman in the face. The girl tried to keep her sister from getting arrested, but she resisted arrest by hitting back. Police sources pointed out that the cop hit back to subdue her.

The 121st Precinct cop's dismissal happened before the IAB could start an investigation, which incensed Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch.

Lynch made it clear that even police officers deserve due process, not be given judgment based on video from social media. He added that what is definite is the officers are trying to stop a violent altercation as they get attacked themselves and called for a probe of what happened, not to base everything on what is seen online.

The older girl was arrested and charged with assault, and the younger sister got a juvenile report, as the New York cop was suspended after punching a teen girl in an after-school brawl.
