At least 28 people were killed and 150 injured in a suicide explosion at a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Monday, according to authorities.

One of the leaders of the Pakistani Taliban, named Sarbakaf Mohmand, took to Twitter to claim responsibility for the Pakistan mosque bombing, according to AP News.

Opposition political groups and government leaders around the country have condemned the attack reportedly carried out by a Pakistan suicide bomber. Peshawar is the capital of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Its governor, Ghulam Ali, has expressed concern that the death toll might increase further.

Since the mosque was part of a larger property that also houses the city's police headquarters, the majority of the fatalities were law enforcement officials. According to the police report, there were around 300-350 worshippers in the area at the time of the Pakistan mosque bombing, per Fox News.

Authorities said the bombing occurred Monday morning while worshippers were inside the mosque. Many injured people are in serious condition, raising fears that the death toll may grow.

The mosque's roof fell from the force of the explosion, hurting several inside the building.

The mosque is located within the Peshawar Police Lines, a section of the city's red zone that also contains several significant government buildings, such as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly Building, the Governor House, and the Chief Minister House.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement condemning the Pakistan blast and directing officials to provide the victims with the best medical care available. He vowed that those responsible for the Pakistan mosque bombing would face "stern action," according to Al Jazeera.
