James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, clarified that the actor of 'Man of Steel,' Henry Cavill, was not fired but simply not hired for future Superman projects.
Yesterday, at a press event that revealed the first chapter of the revamped DCU, 'Gods and Monsters,' Gunn was asked which actors from the old DCEU, which began with 'Man of Steel' and still have a handful of films to go in the new continuity.
Henry Cavill Was Not Fired as Superman
"It's not true that Henry was fired," according to the Hollywood Reporter, Gunn told reporters during a presentation that he had never cast Henry in any of the upcoming five DCU films or five DCU television series. Despite stating that some decisions have been made, Gunn did not elaborate on what those decisions were or whether they had made any decisions for certain actors.
However, Gunn was certain about the status of the DCEU's original two leading actors: Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman. Speculation surrounding Henry Cavill's return as Superman began around the premiere of 'Black Adam,' when the actor reprised his role for the first time since 'Justice League' (2017) in a brief cameo.
Dwayne Johnson, who portrays 'Black Adam, frequently spoke about his film resetting the DCEU, with his and Henry Cavill's characters destined to fight on-screen one day. This was exacerbated by Cavill's assertion that he was officially back and that the Black Adam cameo was a taste of what's to come, as per IGN.
Six weeks after announcing his return, Henry Cavill posted on Twitter that he would not be reprising his role as the 'Man of Steel.' Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran soon took control of DC Studios, after which Gunn posted on Twitter that he would not be returning as the 'Man of Steel.'
'uperman: Legacy,' a story about Superman balancing his Kryptonian and human heritages, will premiere on July 11, 2025, with a new actor donning the costume. It will be followed by four films and five television series that, collectively, constitute the first chapter of the DC Universe, including 'Batman and Robin,' 'The Brave and the Bold', 'Supergirl', and 'Swamp Thing.'

DC Studios' Incoming Movies
The 'Brave and the Bold,' starring an unknown cast, will follow the 2025 Superman film at an unspecified time. It is billed as a 'Batman and Robin' story inspired by Grant Morrison's comic book series, with Damian Wayne, Batman's son, and Talia al-Ghul, the supervillain Robin.
The 'Authority' is a planned film about a group of superheroes who use extreme measures to protect the planet. Also forthcoming are Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the comics by Tom King, and a 'Swamp Thing' standalone film for the big screen.
The eight-hour detective series 'Lanterns' is scheduled to stream on HBO Max. Waller features Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller from 'Suicide Squad,' and 'Paradise Lost' is the origin story of Themyscira, the island where Wonder Woman was born.
In the animated television series Creature Commandos, which is currently in production, Waller forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners. Simultaneously, the studio will release DC Elseworlds stories that deviate from the central DC Universe narrative, similar to the comic books. Joker: Folie a Deux, the sequel to the 2019 Oscar-nominated drama, is one example.
In addition, Robert Pattinson's 'Batman' will return in Matt Reeves' 'The Batman Part II,' which will be released on October 3, 2025 - another Elseworlds film outside of the primary continuity. As a DC Elseworlds project, Ta-Nehisi Coates is also working on a script for a Superman project in which a black actor portrays the man of steel.
David Zaslav, chief executive officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, hopes to reap the financial benefits of a revitalized DC franchise. The shares of the media company have decreased by 43 percent over the past year, as the company aims to save $3 billion by combining Warner Media and Discovery Communications.
